Jim Vick: Listen

Jungle Coming Down/ Drop the Puppet

(Jim Vick)
2005-03-23
Music & Lyrics by Jim Vick
Written in response to an article in Harper's Magazine in the late 80's about the systematic (and ongoing) destruction of the Amazon rainforest. Now that I live on the edge of the jungle in Costa Rica and actually get to see capuchin monkeys in my own neighborhood sometimes, this song has become all the more relevant for me 20 years later. Recorded in Madison, WI on 8 track cassette with the engineering and sequencing help of fusison wizard and Jim Vick Group alumnus Gary Geisler.
This mp3 also includes a bonus track from the same recording sessions, "Drop the Puppet," with Jim doing all the vocals and playing all the instruments except for Gary's drum programming.
Limb by limb
tree by tree
a thousand shades of tumbling greenery
Squawk and buzz of bird and bee
drowned out by rumbling machinery

Fast food hamburger cattle graze
in the ruins of the mighty amazon and congo
Clear cut dredged and set ablaze
for paper pulp and pre-fab condos.

Gone is the home of redwood creeper
rainforest frog and butterfly
Gone are jaguar and capuchin monkey
Shameless greed has stilled their cries.

Jungle coming down!
Jungle coming down!

Trees giving life
Falling leaves building soil
feeding people planting trees
giving air filling lungs
breathing life
Growing child climbing trees
giving air cooling clouds
shedding rain bathing earth
feeding roots growing

Jungle coming down!
Jungle coming down!

Corporate monster eats its young
Poisons the air that fills their lungs
Gives them all that money can buy
on a tortured planet, left barren and dry

Jungle coming down!
Jungle coming down!
